FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What’s the difference between Bowen Therapy and Remedial Massage?
An Aromatherapy massage is relaxing although deep tissue work may be used in areas of tension. The rhythmical, flowing massage strokes calm the nerves and de-stress the client while the essential oil blend prescribed just for you, has further therapeutic benefits.
Bowen Therapy is recommended for specific problems such as frozen shoulder, bursitis, fibromyalgia, leg cramps, headaches, low back pain and pain from unknown origin. It soothes the nervous system allowing the body to go into repair mode. Often a session gives relief from symptoms for which you didn’t seek treatment such as low energy, emotional issues and stress. Another difference between massage and Bowen is Bowen’s minimalist approach. There is a two minute wait in-between sets of moves, to allow the moves to be integrated into the body. This gives Bowen Therapy an almost meditative quality in which the brain can go into a healing, repairing state.
I came to you with frozen shoulder, which your Bowen Treatment helped, but I also noticed my irritable bowels calmed down, Is there a link?
Yes, there is, Bowen works in a few ways:
Bowen Therapy uses a cross-fibre muscle release technique which creates a piezoelectric current, documented to have strong healing properties.
The gentle passive stretches used during a treatment also rehydrate the fascia giving the patient better range of motion and ease of movement. This affects not only your joints and muscles, but your organs too. Bowen affected your fascia by re-hydrating it, increasing your range of motion, releasing your frozen shoulder, read on!
Having a frozen shoulder and IBS is stressful. The link between stress and physical disorders is well-documented. Many people are stuck in the fight or flight response, unable to switch back into a rest and repair mode, often due to anxiety. If sleep is affected, the body cannot heal itself during the night. This puts an additional strain on the nerves and adrenal glands, with the body then sliding into a state of dis-ease, shutting down mentally, physically and emotionally.
The peaceful, meditative state when the parasympathetic system kicks in can be achieved through an Aromatherapy Massage or a Bowen Therapy Treatment. Clients feel safe in a warm. low-lit room, with quiet music in the background, wrapped up in blankets having a treatment that soothes the nerves up the spine and relieves physical tension. This calm environment steadies blood pressure and the heartbeat, slows down and deepens breathing, putting clients in a very restful state, allowing healing to begin.
Why should I do the daily exercises you recommend?
To get the best and quickest results from your treatment I may show you some stretches and suggest postural changes.
How often do I need to have a treatment?
You are unique, so I can’t predict how quickly you will respond to Bowen or Massage, but on average I ideally see clients once a week for three weeks, Thereafter a monthly treatment might be beneficial to maintain your results or you may not need another appointment for some time.
I put my back out this morning, can I have a treatment today?
Yes, I would strongly recommend a Bowen treatment to treat your muscle spasm whereas you may not be able to tolerate massage for 48 hours or so after an injury.
I have a cold/flu/feel ill, can I have a massage?
No, I will not treat you. Having a body treatment could sent the virus/bacterial infection deeper into the body, putting your organs under greater strain. Please come and see me when you feel better to get your body back into a healthy state.
I can't decide if I need Bowen Therapy or an Aromatherapy Treatment?
During your consultation, we will discuss your health concerns so I can use my many years experience in the health care industry to decide what treatment will give you the best results.
If you're very stressed and need to slow down, I would recommend an aromatherapy massage, the slow rythmical massage strokes soothe the nervous system leaving clients feeling calm, rested and deeply relaxed.
Bowen Therapy is also relaxing, and has great success in treating problems such as poor range of motion in shoulders, jaw issues (great for those with orthodontic braces), headaches, Menieres disease, fibromyalgia, ankle problems, pain through the testes (often caused by cycling), sciatica and other debilitating health problems.
I am having Chiropractic treatment at the moment. Should I come to you before or after it?
I'd recommend your massage before your Chiropractic adjustment, whereas Bowen Therapy should be done after your Chiropractic adjustment.
